We love the soothing benefits of aloe so much that we incorporate it into many of products like our Lavender & Aloe Facial Toner, Cucumber Aloe Rescue Gel and Naked Deep Tissue Massage Butter.
AMBER RESIN has antioxidant properties that help nourish and protect skin. We use an amber oil infusion made with jojoba oil. It is a star ingredient in the Amber & Myrrh Firming Body Cream.
APPLE AMINO ACIDS are a standardized extract from an organic crop of fresh apples that gently cleanses and has a slight exfoliating effect due to the natural AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids). Naturally high in vitamin C and various phenols, this extract provides powerful antioxidant activity to help promote brighter, beautiful skin. It also reduces trans-epidermal water loss, keeping the skin moisturized. Apple aminos create a naturally soap-free cleanser that we use in our Apple Chamomile Cleansing Gel.
APPLE FRUIT HYDROSOL* is made by steam distilling fresh organic apples. Retaining trace elements from fresh apples, it hydrates and nourishes skin. The gentle cleansing properties in apple also help clear and prevent clogged pores. We use this deliciously aromatic hydrosol in our RADIANCE Collection.

APRICOT KERNEL OIL is naturally rich in vitamin A, E, oleic acid, linoleic acid and antioxidants to nourish and hydrate skin. It penetrates easily with no greasy residue, making it an ideal makeup remover in our Apricot Cleansing Oil.
Argan Oil is an antioxidant rich source of fatty acids. This emollient oil is excellent for nourishing very dry skin conditions.
ARNICA may help minimize soreness. It has been used for centuries to help with muscle and joint aches and pain and to reduce bruising. We slow-infuse organically grown arnica flowers in olive oil for several weeks to draw out the beneficial chemicals and then add it to our Deep Freeze Sore Muscle Rub.

BAMBOO POWDER is a mild scrub rich in minerals and silica that help gently exfoliate skin. It’s the perfect facial exfoliant in our Seaweed & Mint Exfoliating Scrub.
BEESWAX has powerful soothing properties to help calm the skin and provide a strong moisture barrier. Our beeswax is carefully gathered and filtered by hand in Oregon from bees who eat from wild lands and organic farms. We use it in many of our face and body products, including the best-selling Skin Doctor Salve.
BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL is an aromatic mood booster. While most citrus essential oils are cold-pressed, we source a specially steam distilled Bergamot oil. The steam distillation removes the photosensitizing chemical called Bergaptene. Our bergaptene-free bergamot oil lends its skin soothing properties and bright aroma to several of our products including Saving Grace Night Cream.
BHRINGARAJ helps to rejuvenate and brighten the skin, while reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also has calming properties that helps to reduce redness and irritation.
BLACK PEPPER ESSENTIAL OIL is steam distilled from the peppercorns. It's warming and stimulates circulation, while working as an analgesic (pain reliever). The oil also has anti-bacterial and detoxifying properties, is high in antioxidants and brings mental clarity. You can experience this unique ingredient in our seasonal Cardamom Vanilla body care.
BLUE TANSY ESSENTIAL OIL~ is also known as Moroccan Chamomile. It is rich in chamazulene, a powerful ingredient to help soothe and calm skin and reduce the appearance of redness. Ours is wild harvested and steam-distilled from the fresh flowers.

BURITI OIL, also called Mauritia flexosa oil, is extracted from the nuts of the moriche palm tree. It is native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical regions in South America. It has gained popularity for use in skincare products as a natural, gentler alternative to retinol. This makes it a great option for people who have not been able to tolerate retinol. Additionally, the combination of antioxidants, vitamins and fatty acids in buriti oil help to combat the signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Regular use can help contribute to a healthier more radiant complexion.
Sustainability: Buriti fruit is sustainably farmed by locals and is catalyzing large-scale rainforest conservation. The palm and its fruit are regarded as the “tree of life” by the natives in Brazil because of its nutritional value and positive impact on the economy. The fruit is eaten fresh and has been used by the Amazonian natives for centuries to protect skin from the sun.
CALENDULA FLOWERS* are rich in flavonoids that help support healing, soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Calendula also We slow-infuse the bright orange and yellow flowers in organic olive oil for several weeks to draw out the beneficial chemicals. It’s also rich in carotenoids that rejuvenate tired skin and act as antioxidants. It also brightens and improves skin tone and firmness. This is one of our favorite botanicals and we add it to many of our products like our Skin Doctor Salve.
CANDELILLA WAX~ is a nutrient rich emollient from a shrub that grows in the harsh desert southwest. Naturally, it’s excellent at helping to prevent moisture loss and helps our skin retain a healthy moisture barrier. You’ll find this vegan ingredient in our Wild Rose Lip Gloss.
CARDAMOM ESSENTIAL OIL cleans the pores of dirt, oils and impurities, leaving skin luminous and radiant. We celebrate the intoxicating aroma every autumn, making our seasonal Cardamom Vanilla body care collection.
CARMINE EXTRACT~: Natural color (not vegan) from microscopic prickly pear scale. This whitish spider-web looking substance grows on the leaves of the prickly pear plants. When pressed, it produces a brilliant fuchsia color you’ll see in our Rose & Cardamom Cleanser and Youth in Bloom Phytoactive Firming Serum.
CARROT SEED OIL* nourishes dry skin, helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and is rich in carotene & vitamin E. Heralded for its ability to protect skin against the ravages of aging, carrot seed oil is a key ingredient in the Herbal Facial Oil and Apple Stem Cell Daily Radiance Cream.

COPAIBA BALSAM ESSENTIAL OIL~ is well known for its calming and pain relieving properties. "Copal" is derived from the Spanish word for incense, copelli, and any number of resinous gums or exudates from trees in Malaysia and South America are known as "Copal". We use essential oil from the Brazilian Copaifera officinalis tree which has the most published research on its soothing effects. You’ll experience it’s soothing effects on muscle and joint pain in the Deep Freeze Sore Muscle Rub.
COMFREY ROOT* is rich in a compound known as allantoin, which is found within the root mucilage* that comfrey produces. It soothes skin irritations and itching, makes skin more supple and elastic. It also acts as an emollient. This is a moisturizing treatment that helps to develop a protective film over the skin cells, reducing water loss. We make an oil infusion and a decoction of the dried root and use this beautiful skin soother in the Zinc Rescue Cream and Yarrow Oil Free Moisturizing Gel.
CORN STARCH soothes sunburn & rashes, thickens creams and keeps creams from feeling “oily”. We use a non-GMO corn starch made with organically grown corn. It helps give our Coconut Lactic Peel its gorgeously smooth texture.
CUCUMBER HYDROSOL is collected from the steam of fresh, juicy cucumbers. This cooling water soothes, calms and hydrates the skin. Experience it in the Goji Mate Ultralight Moisturizer, Cucumber Aloe Rescue Gel, Cucumber Face Polish, Willow Bark Pore Refining Serum and Yarrow & Willow Bark BHA Toner.
CYPRESS ESSENTIAL OIL~ restores skin hydration, helps softens, tones and clarifies the skin. It’s antioxidant properties protect the skin and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. High in potent phytoncides, cypress is deeply calming to skin and nervous system and are natural mood lifters. You’ll find it in our Verbena & Sage Cleanser and Forest Bathing Shower Gel.
DIAZOLIDINYL UREA is one of the very few synthetic ingredients we use. Paired with iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, it’s broadly considered considered safe for use as a preservative. We use just the tiniest bit (0.02%) to prevent harmful bacteria and mold from growing in a few of our products. While we prefer to use 100% natural ingredients, a few of our products haven’t shown good results with available natural preservatives. We continue to research and hope to one day replace this with a natural ingredient.
ECHINACEA can help reduce the appearance of redness, aid in clearing pores and protect skin from environmental stressors. We use an extract of the dried roots in the Yarrow Oil Free Moisturizing Gel. Angelina grows this beneficial herb in her sacred spiral garden, harvesting the fresh flowers each summer. We make a decoction (an extra strength tea) to add to our Yarrow & Willow Bark BHA Toner.
ELDERBERRY EXTRACT* is rich in Vitamin A, can help soothe skin, improve the appearance of a dull complexion and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL* helps reduce dryness and improves the skin's moisture barrier. In aromatherapy, it is widely used for its simultaneously uplifting and calming fragrance. Known as the "fever tree", eucalyptus is one of the oldest traditional medicines in Australia, prized for its ability to open the sinuses when inhaled (which is why we tend to associate it with the traditional “spa” smell). We add it to our Seaweed & Mint Exfoliating Scrub and Skin Doctor Salve.
EVAPORATED CANE JUICE (SUGAR*) is an excellent exfoliator, scrubbing away dead, dull and dry skin, leaving a soft, glowing finish. It’s skin cleansing properties make it a good alternative to soap. Our Oregon Lavender & Sage Sugar Scrub, and Detox Lemon Drop Brightening Sugar Scrub contain this satisfying scrubby goodness.
EVENING PRIMROSE OIL* is cold pressed from certified organically grown seeds of the lovely delicate yellow flowers. It is a rich source of gamma linoleic acid and can help soothe and protect skin from environmental damage and the effects of aging. We blend evening primrose oil into many of our most nourishing products.
FERULIC ACID is a soothing antioxidant that can also help improve the stability and effectiveness of other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. It helps rejuvenate dry, stressed skin and improve the appearance of an uneven skin tone. That is why it was included in our Ultra-C Serum.
FRANKINCENSE ESSENTIAL OIL~ is highly prized for its irresistible aroma. Wild harvested from tree resin in Somalia (without damaging the trees, of course!), Frankincense oil can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, calm irritation, and protect skin from the ravages of aging. All skin types can benefit from its restorative effects. You'll find it in our Yarrow & Willow Bark BHA Toner, Saving Grace Night Cream and the Yarrow Oil Free Moisturizing Gel.
GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL is a hydrating and skin-strengthening ingredient. Ours comes from organic farms in Egypt. We have included it in our Geranium & Lupine Eye Cream as well as several other products.
Glycerine (Vegetable Glycerine) acts as a humectant, helping to plump up skin and allowing it to retain a healthy moisture barrier. Additionally, it helps relieve dry and environmentally stressed skin conditions. It is a star ingredient in many aos products including the YIB Phytoactive Firming Serum and Saving Grace Night Cream.
GOJI BERRY EXTRACT contains high concentrations of polysaccharides, amino acids and vitamins which help nourish skin and protect it from harmful oxidation. We included it in our beloved Goji Mate Ultralight Moisturizer.
GOTU KOLA*: Also known as Centella asiatica, Gotu Kola is rich in skin protective antioxidants. It is an excellent hydrating and skin protecting ingredient in the Honey Avocado Rescue Mask.
GREEN TEA EXTRACT* contains high levels of polyphenols (bioflavonoids) and is a rich source of antioxidants- over 200 times more potent than vitamin E at protecting skin from environmental stressors. The natural caffeine in green tea also tightens and rejuvenates fatigued skin and reduces the appearance of under eye puffiness. Experience its benefits in our Coconut Lactic Peel, Geranium & Lupine Eye Cream, Cucumber Rescue Gel, Herbal Day Cream, Herbal Night Cream, Youth in Bloom Hydrating Cleanser, Willow Bark Pore Refining Serum and Yarrow & Willow Bark BHA Toner.
GUAR GUM is a plant-derived thickening agent. We use it as a natural thickener in several of our Hand & Body soap formulations.
HELICHRYSUM (Immortelle) can help soothe and calm irritated skin. It is included in several aos formulations including the Calming Facial Oil.
HEMISQUALENE, made from sugarcane, helps minimize transepidermal water loss by providing hydration and moisture retention to the skin.
HEMP SEED OIL* is full of vitamins, omega fatty acids and antioxidants to help nourish skin and protect against environmental damage. We've been using hemp seed oil decades before hemp was legal to grow in the US (We bought it in Canada for decades). It’s high ceramide content, at 60%, strengthens stressed skin and builds resilience to future irritation and prevents TEM- trans epidermal moisture loss. Hemp seed oil benefits all skin types and you can receive its benefits in many of our products, including our famous Skin Doctor Salve.
AOS HERBALBRIGHT COMPLEXTM is our proprietary blend of skin brightening botanicals. Packed with powerful antioxidants, these plants work synergistically to help improve the appearance of sun damaged skin. Natural resveratrol (present in Japanese Knotweed), licorice root and lemon peel bioferment brighten and even skin tone. A blend of potent alpine botanicals (Mallow, Peppermint, Cowslip, Lady's Mantle, Speedwell, Melissa, Yarrow, Immortelle and Bearberry) brightens and evens skin tone and reduces the color intensity of age spots.
HIBISCUS is an antioxidant rich ingredient that is hydrating and nourishing. It is included in the Goji Mate Ultralight Moisturizer and Fresh Fig Lip Tint.
HONEY: Raw Oregon Honey is teeming with natural enzymes and hat nourish and rejuvenate stressed skin. Honey binds water to the skin, helping to soften fine lines and wrinkles and soothe redness. Our honey comes from happy bees at our local organic farm, Rainshadow Organics. Featured in our Honey Avocado Rescue Mask.
HORSE CHESTNUT EXTRACT is antioxidant rich and very soothing. It reduces the appearance of redness, spider veins, fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps repair skin that is suffering from environmental stressors. You’ll find this ingredient in our Apple Stem Cell Daily Radiance Cream.
HYALURONIC ACID “HA”, also known as sodium hyaluronate, is a natural component of our skin and serves as a water reservoir for the cells. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. We use a vegan HA, of course (some companies use the less expensive animal derived HA, commonly from cockscomb and shark fins- yuck!). The super-low molecular weight HA that we use absorbs easily into the skin. As we age, the loss of hyaluronic acid results in dehydrated, thin and “crepey looking” wrinkly skin. Adding HA to your skin care routine can help hydrate and plump the skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We add this incredibly effective ingredient to many of our products.
HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE is a naturally derived thickening agent. It comes from cellulose, a sugar found in the cell walls of plants.

JAPANESE KNOTWEED~ is rich in resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that helps to care for your skin with natural defenses and protect it from environmental stressors. Ours is wild harvested right here in Oregon.
JASMINE FLOWER can help reduce redness and calm stressed skin. We make our own Jasmine Flower decoction (like an extra strong tea) from the dried buds and use it in our soothing formulas like Chamomile Dream Ultrarich Body Cream, Cucumber Aloe Rescue Gel, Geranium & Lupine Eye Cream and Honey Avocado Rescue Mask.
JOJOBA OIL* (pronounced “ho-ho-ba) is a key ingredient in many of our formulas. Boasting 96% ceramides, it’s the closest botanical ingredient to our skin’s own oil. Ceramides are essential building blocks of our skin, creating a permeable moisture barrier and keeping the skin strong and resilient. Because the dried jojoba beans are very hard, almost all oil presses overheat the oil, breaking the beneficial molecules. We buy our oil from our friend, Kirk, who designed and built his own presses that keep the process at a lower temperature. It’s time consuming to press jojoba oil this way, but Kirk is dedicated to crafting the finest oil in the world. He operates his presses in his home garage (it looks like a mini Willy Wonka setup!) and presses a fresh batch each time we order it.
JUNIPER BERRY ESSENTIAL OIL~ Native to our home of Central Oregon, juniper trees cover the landscape here. The dusky blue-purple berries are rich in nutrients. The essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh berries and is highly beneficial for use on skin that is troubled by inflammation. It works to repair and strengthen the epidermis, allowing it to defend itself from impurities that can damage the skin and cause premature aging. High in potent phytoncides, cypress is deeply calming to skin and nervous system and are natural mood lifters. You’ll find it in our Forest Bathing Shower Gel.
KOJIC ACID is a gentle exfoliator. It can help brighten skin and improve uneven skin tone. The story goes that it was originally discovered when someone noticed that the hands of Japanese saki makers were beautifully bright and smooth, even though the rest of their skin was old and weathered. Kojic acid can be derived from koji, which is created during the sake brewing process from fermented rice. Ours is obtained from mushrooms and we use it in the Ultra-C Serum.
KUKUI NUT OIL is high in linoleic and alpha-linolenic essential fatty acids. It has been used by Hawaiian natives for hundreds of years for its highly absorbent and soothing properties. It is an excellent treatment for dry skin, irritated skin, which is why we add it our Broad Spectrum Sunshade Lotion and Goji Mate Ultralight Moisturizer.
LACTIC ACID (non-dairy) is produced from the fermentation of plant sugars. It gently dissolves dead skin cells, promoting cellular turnover and improving skin texture. It's an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) and is one of the gentler exfoliating ingredients. Our sugar based lactic acid also hydrates the skin, keeping it bouncy and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a key ingredient in our Coconut Lactic Peel.
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL*, HYDROSOL* & HERB* calms and purifies the skin. The aroma is calming. Our lavender is grown and harvested just a few miles from our lab in beautiful Central Oregon at Tumalo Lavender Farm. This small family farm distills the essential oil right after harvest to yield some of the world's finest essential oil. In addition to soothing skin irritations, it also calms the spirits. We use lavender in many of our products.
LECITHIN is a powerful emollient, derived from organic soybeans, that helps increase hydration, locks in moisture and improves the appearance of skin texture, creating a silky smoothness. It also helps support skin barrier function. We use it in several aos formulations including the Geranium & Lupine Eye Cream.
LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL* acts as a purifying agent that cleanses and exfoliates while helping to clear up issues such as clogged pores and oiliness. It’s a wonderful mood booster, brightening our spirits and filling the room with its happy, juicy scent.
LEMON PEEL BIOFERMENT is a prebiotic, supporting healthy skin, brightening darker spots and patches and helping improve the appearance of dull, lack skin. Whole lemon fruits are macerated and incubated with Lactobacillus lacti (the same bacteria used to produce many fermented food products like cheese and sour cream). This ferment is then further processed to remove the potential allergens, citral and geraniol. The resulting ferment is said to have high antioxidant activity. We harness it’s power in the Coconut Lactic Peel, Cucumber Face Polish, Detox Lemon Drop Brightening Hand & Body Lotion and Ultra-C Serum.
LEMON BALM / MELISSA ESSENTIAL OIL is steam distilled from the fresh leaves and stems. It has protective antioxidant properties, brightens and helps improve the appearance of dull, dry skin. The fresh, uplifting aroma is a powerful mood booster, giving our Saving Grace Night Cream its signature scent.
LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL is steam distilled from the fresh leaf of the plant. Grown in India, our oil is certified organic by Oregon Tilth. It imparts a citrusy sweet, clean and uplifting aroma. Lemongrass removes impurities and leaves the skin feeling clean and clear. It’s a perfect ingredient for the Youth in Bloom Hydrating Cleanser and Cucumber Face Polish.
LICORICE ROOT* is an antioxidant rich skin-soothing ingredient that can help calm irritated skin, soothe sensitive skin. It brightens darker spots, improve the appearance of uneven skin tones and reduces the appearance of scars. MANJISTHA* is a traditional Ayurvedic herb from India, long used to brighten darker spots on the skin, especially when used in con with raw honey. High in antioxidants, it also helps to protect skin from the effects of sun damage and aging, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and gives the skin an overall youthful appearance. It is also known to calm skin irritations. We infuse this herb into the Honey Avocado Rescue Mask.

MEADOWFOAM SEED OIL* has a lovely light texture and contains over 95% long chain fatty acids and provides a natural moisture barrier for the skin. It’s also rich in antioxidants that protect our skin while at the same time keeping our formulas fresher, longer. This amazing little plant blooms in gorgeous lwhite flowers making rolling fields look reminiscent of sea foam, this the name. The plants are restorative to the earth, fixing nitrogen and regenerating depleted soil. MOROCCAN FIG SEED OIL used by Berber women for generations to combat dry desert conditions, this oil has extraordinary anti-aging properties. ROSE is high in vitamin C, which helps protect skin against environmental stressors. It purifies the skin and effectively controls and balances natural oils. It also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, soothes redness and rejuvenates stressed skin. We use rose hydrosol (a steam distillate of the fresh petals), rose absolute (an intensely aromatic concentrate) and whole dried rose petals in our formulas.
ROSEHIP SEED OIL* {Rosa rubignosa}: Rose hips are the fruit of the rose shrub. They form after successful pollination in early spring, ripening through late summer. Rosehip seeds lay inside this little fruit. Native to Europe and western Asia, most rosehip (and rosehip seeds) are today cultivated in the Andes mountains. We use a cold-pressed oil from the seeds because it’s high in essential fatty acids and provitamin A, making it an excellent ingredient for nourishing skin.
ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL~ {Rosemarinus officinalis} is a purifying ingredient that aids in decongesting pores and cleansing skin.
ROSEWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL {Aniba rosaeodora} is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to the Amazon Basin, Rosewood is prized for its floral, spicy aroma. In the 1980's, facing concerns about overharvesting, the Brazilian government created regulations that mandate replanting after harvest and encourage using branches instead of trunks to make woodchips. Despite these efforts, rosewood remains on the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) Appendix II list. Skin Benefits: Made of 90% linalool, rosewood essential oil helps purify skin. Its rosey aroma completes our Rose & Cardamom Cleanser.
SANDALWOOD* has woody, smokey and sweet heart notes complement the warm and rich balsamic base, with a tenacious woody dry-down that smells fresh, sweet and herbal. It is used as a base note in perfumery. We obtain our sandalwood essential oil from regenerative farms in Western Australia. Sandalwood is a powerful emollient, reducing dryness and replenishing the moisture in skin, increasing elasticity. The oil also tightens skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while soothing skin with calming compounds that even out tone, reduce the appearance of scars and leave skin renewed and refreshed.
SCLEROTIUM GUM is a naturally-derived, sugar-based ingredient. It can function as a thickener, stabilizer and skin conditioner.
SEAWEED~ cleanses and nourishes skin, provides vital minerals and micronutrients and helps to resolve problems such as clogged pores and blemishes.
SESAME OIL~^ {Sesamum indicum} is the oldest cultivated oil crop known. Sesame was domesticated in India at least 3500 years ago and occurs naturally in sub-Saharan Africa. This deeply nourishing oil is used the world over for its skin softening abilities.
SHEA BUTTER~^ is chock full of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. It's deeply moisturizing and helps calm irritated skin. Ours is sustainably harvested and made using traditional methods by a women-run cooperative in western Africa.
SNOW MUSHROOM EXTRACT (Tremella fuciformis) is a natural ingredient that provides many benefits for the skin. It is rich in polysaccharides, specifically beta-glucans, which have the ability to hold and retain moisture. Snow mushroom extract is sometimes used as a natural alternative to hyaluronic acid. The particles in snow mushrooms are smaller than those in hyaluronic acid, so they have the ability to penetrate the skin more easily. This means snow mushroom extract offers similar, if not better, effects when used in a skincare formulation. As an added bonus, they are sustainably cultivated. It doesn’t take large amounts of land or water to grow them.
SODIUM BORATE~ {Sodium borate} is the result of the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes in Borax, California, USA. Sodium Borate, also called Borax, is a natural occurring mineral that enables water to stay mixed together with beeswax and oils, and contributes to the inherent natural preservation of a formula, reducing the need for chemical preservatives.
SOYBEAN OIL* {Glycine max} is a species of legume native to East Asia and has been cultivated for some 8000 years for the high protein content. We use a non-GMO, cold-pressed certified organic soybean oil grown in the USA. A rich source of linoleic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid, organic soybean oil helps the skin absorb other nutrients. High in protein, vitamin E and lecithin, it moisturizes, has antioxidant properties and can help brighten the appearance of dull skin.
ST. JOHN'S WORT~ infused into organic olive oil, is deeply soothing to the skin and reduces pain associated with muscle and joint soreness. Angelina personally wild harvests these beneficial flowers in the Cascade mountains.
STEARIC ACID is a natural, waxy fatty acid found in animal and vegetable fats. Coconut, Shea butter and cocoa butter are all very high in steric acid. Ours is made from coconut oil in a pretty simple process. The oil is added to hot water to saponify the triglycerides and then is distilled. It's useful as a thickener, surfactant and emulsifier. It allows the water- and oil-based components of our products to settle into a smooth, even “lotion” or “cream” consistency. It produces a calming effect on the skin and adds a "pearly" or "waxy" feel to our products.
SUNFLOWER OIL* {Helianthus annuus} is native to North America; native Americans domesticated the crop some 3000 years ago. The large yellow flower is actually composed of hundreds of tiny flowers. When the seeds ripen, these small flowers fall away and the black and white seedheads turn downward. Cold-pressed unrefined organic sunflower is a light, non-greasy oil that won’t leave skin feeling oily. It is rich in linoleic acid (an Omega-6 essential fatty acid), ceramides as well as palmitic acid and stearic acid, all components of healthy skin.
SWEET LUPINE EXTRACT, from the seeds of sustainably cultivated lupine plants in France, helps to temporarily tighten and rejuvenate the look of skin, while decreasing the appearance of fine lines.
SWEET ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL* has a bright, juicy full-bodied citrus aroma. You simply can't help but feel a little more joyful after smelling it. It decongests and purifies the skin and helps reduce dullness making your skin look and feel glowing and renewed.
TANGERINE ESSENTIAL OIL*^ {Citrus reticulata}: Tangerine was the name given to a fruit coming from Tangier, Morocco. With a bright, delicate citrus aroma, it is closely related to mandarin oranges and is native to mainland China. Like most citrus essential oils, tangerine oil is an excellent ingredient to help brighten, decongest and purify the skin. We also use it in our products to help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and keep products fresh.
TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL* has antioxidant and skin-soothing properties that can help calm irritated skin conditions, purifies pores and cleanses the skin.
TETRAHEXYLDECYL ASCORBATE is a stable, oil soluble vitamin C ester that helps clarify and brighten skin tone by inhibiting melanogenesis (production of pigment).
THYME ESSENTIAL OIL* {Thymus zygis} is steam distilled from the leaves and flowers. It is antioxidant rich, protecting the skin from the effects of sun exposure and other harmful environmental damage. It’s also cleansing, soothing and rejuvenating to the skin.
TITANIUM DIOXIDE~ is the naturally occurring oxide of titanium and provides protection from the UVA and UVB rays that cause sunburn. Our titanium dioxide is mined and ground to a fine powder that goes on clear in our sunscreens. We use a grind just larger than the “nanoparticles“ so it remains on top of the skin, both absorbing and reflecting the sun’s rays, rather than absorbing into the body. Current studies show that, when used in a sunscreen cream, titdioxide is reef and marine safe.
TURKEY RED CASTOR OIL is an excellent cleanser, binding to dirt and makeup and rinses cleanly. It is also very nourishing and soothing to the skin.
TURMERIC*^ {Curcuma longa} is native to southwestern India. It can help soothe and calm irritated skin. It also nourishes and improves the appearance of dry, dull skin.
UNDARIA^~ {Undaria pinnatifida} Often called wakame (ワカメ), this edible cold-water seaweed provides an abundance of beneficial minerals and nutrients to the skin, including omega-3 fatty acids, sodium, iodine, calcium, thiamine, and niacin. UVA URSI (BEARBERRY)~, also known as kinnikinnick, is packed with powerful antioxidants. The leaves have a high concentration of hydroquinone, primarily in the form of arbutin (Arbutin is a distant relative of hydroquinone, but is totally natural and more gentle on the skin), thus giving bearberry extract its ability to brighten the skin. It can help rejuvenate skin and lessen the signs of aging. This sweet little plant carpets the forests in our Central Oregon mountains year-round.
VANILLA EXTRACT^ is a skin-soothing ingredient with antioxidant benefits. Aromatically it is sweet, warm and comforting. We purchase ours from family farms in Tahiti.
VEGETABLE EMULSIFYING WAX is sourced in the USA from naturally occurring plant fats and esters like non-GMO corn and soy. This natural wax is what makes some of our moisturizers go on without a greasy, sticky feeling. It allows water and oil molecules to sit right next to each other, creating a moisture barrier for the skin.
VERBENA HYDROSOL smells simply wonderful- bright and fresh. It helps disperse excess skin oil, making it easier to wash off and leaves the skin with a brighter appearance.
VETIVER ESSENTIAL OIL~ is steam distilled from the root on a wild Indonesian grass. The dark, viscous oil has a deep, earthy, calming, sweet aroma. It moisturizes and hydrates the skin, balances skin pH and evens skin tone. At the same time, it tightens pores and reduces oiliness, calms irritation and redness and helps delay the signs of aging.
VITAMIN C: There are many forms of vitamin C and we use 3: Ascorbic acid, Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. All are derived from citrus fruits and each one has unique properties that are beneficial to our skin. Please see the individual listings in this ingredients list for details.
VITAMIN E OIL {tocopherol acetate} provides powerful antioxidant activity to help protect skin from environmental stressors. It helps nourish and replenish skin. Vitamin E also protects our formulas from oxidation, keeping them fresher for longer.
WESTERN RED CEDAR LEAF ESSENTIAL OIL~ is steam distilled in the wild from the fresh boughs of the spectacular trees on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. The naturally occurring phytoncides are deeply calming to skin and nervous system and are natural mood lifters.
WHITE PEONY TEA EXTRACT contains antioxidant properties and is prized for its brightening, skin-soothing and rejuvenating abilities. High levels of caffeine tighten and tone the skin, reducing the appearance of under eye puffiness.
WILLOW BARK~ is a natural, gentler source of salicylic acid than its synthetic counterpart. It exfoliates dead skin and helps clear clogged pores while soothing and calming the skin at the same time. We find it helps prevent reduce blemishes and ingrown hairs. You’ll find it in the Willow Bark Pore Refining Serum.
Wintergreen Essential Oil (Gaultheria procumbens) is the active component of the wintergreen plant, methyl salicylate, and is widely used in prescription and over the counter topical pain relievers. Making it a perfect ingredient to be included in the Deep Freeze Sore Muscle Rub.
WITCH HAZEL EXTRACT~ helps remove dirt, oil and impurities while improving the appearance of clogged pores. Our witch hazel is sustainably wild harvested and steam distilled right here in Oregon.
XANTHAN GUM is a polysaccharide secreted by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris during the fermentation of a sugar like glucose or lactose. Today most xanthan gum is produced from corn glucose. Commonly used as a thickener within the food industry, xanthan gum acts as a stabilizer in skincare products, preventing ingredients from separating for a smooth, easy-to-apply consistency. YARROW~ has soothing and nourishing properties to help calm irritated skin conditions. We add this useful herb to products in the CLEAR Collection as it's ideal for oily and congested skin. Angelina grows our yarrow in her sacred spiral garden at home and harvests the tender leaves every summer. We make a tincture with the fresh leaves.
YERBA MATÉ^* has 52 more active compounds and three times the antioxidants as green tea. You’ll find this amazing ingredient in our Goji Maté Ultralight Moisturizer. Yerba Mate contains almost all the vitamins needed to sustain life: A, C, E, B1, B2, and B complex, carotene, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and biotin. Plus 15 amino acids, magnesium, calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, manganese, silicon, phosphates, zinc, niacin, sulfur, chlorophyll, choline and inositol.
YLANG YLANG* {Cananga odorata} is grown in Madagascar and steam-distilled from the fresh flowers. The thin, clear oil has a richly sweet-floral aroma with fruity undertones. It helps to balance oiliness and soothe irritated skin. This precious oil is used in aromatherapy to help promote relaxation. You’ll find it in our decadent Chamomile Dream Collection and in some of our more soothing facial products.
ZINC OXIDE~ is a naturally occurring chalk-like mineral with skin-soothing properties. As an ingredient in sunscreens, it protects skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. You’ll find this versatile ingredient in some of our facial moisturizers, our Broad Spectrum Sunshade Lotion and in our beloved Zinc Rescue Cream. Mined and ground to an ultra-fine powder, it goes on clear, without creating the dreaded “ghostly” look. Used in topical creams, zinc oxide is safe for marine life and reefs.
