    Does Oily Skin Need Moisture?

    Does Oily Skin Need Moisture?

It sounds counter-intuitive: if you struggle with oily skin, the last thing you’d think it needs is more moisture. But the truth is, the reason your skin over-produces oil may be that it’s not getting enough hydration. Maybe you’ve scrapped this very important skincare step thinking it would help, only to experience even oilier skin. Don’t worry–we’re using science to get you out of this skin concern cycle.

How can oily skin be dehydrated?

The fact that oily skin can’t be dry is a major misconception about skin. In actuality, though sebum—the oil produced from oil glands—may be plentiful, the surrounding skin may be dry. Sebum plays a role in retaining moisture in the surface skin cells. But by itself, it may not be adequate without a humectant, which helps keep water from evaporating. Basically, oil and water are two different things, and our skin needs both to be healthy.

How do you know if you have oily skin?

A certain amount of oil is naturally produced by the skin, but oily skin is usually also accompanied by increased pore size, a shiny complexion, and a tendency toward blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Some of us experience these symptoms more during warm months and in humid locations. That’s because sebum becomes more fluid and flows more easily out of pores when it’s hot outside. We also experience an increase in sweat, which acts as an emulsifier, allowing oil to spread more easily over the skin.

What’s our best moisturizer for oily skin?

Oily skin's moisturizing needs can be a bit tricky to get right. Too little water and it becomes dehydrated. Add oil, and it can become extra greasy and blemish-prone. So what’s our best moisturizer for oily skin? Yarrow Oil-Free Moisturizing Gel was specially formulated to provide the right amount of hydration for oily skin. (Plus, it’s non-acnegenic, which means that it will not clog pores or cause acne.)

A gel formula is ideal, because it’ll feel very light and refreshing while still helping to replenish your skin’s natural moisture balance. Yarrow Oil-Free Moisturizing Gel also primes skin for any treatment or makeup to follow—thanks to its smooth, easy-gliding texture. Made with extracts of yarrow, echinacea, hyaluronic acid (HA), and frankincense, it strengthens the skin’s barrier.

For oily skin types, we recommend using Yarrow Oil-Free Moisturizing Gel twice a day after cleansing with Verbena & Sage Cleanser followed by an application of the Yarrow & Willow Bark BHA Toner to restore your skin's pH. Use the Willow Bark Pore Refining Serum directly on any blemishes. Allow it to soak in for a minute before applying the Yarrow Oil-Free Moisturizing Gel.

Exfoliating 2-3 times each week with the Seaweed & Mint Exfoliating Scrub will effectively remove dead skin buildup, keeping those pores beautifully clear.
